Is defined as the ability to develop and apply conceptual thinking that contributes to the vision and future strategic direction of the business.  Many manager's career objectives are hampered by their apparent inability to think strategically. To be seen as having this ability we would look for the person displaying these behavioural indicators:

  • Can conceptualise and develop their thinking to explore new business opportunities.
  • Is not constrained by current organisational boundaries.
  • Comfortable working with concepts and doesn't get drawn into operational solutions or implementation.
  • Actively supports the medium and long term demands of the business despite 'here and now' pressures.
  • Conveys a passion and enthusiasm in selling the/their 'vision'.
  • A visionary, prepared to look beyond the demands and priorities of their own business.
  • Avoids getting drawn into inappropriate levels of detail.
  • Displays lateral thinking approaches to business.
  • Keeps up to date on latest theories on strategic thinking.
  • Is aware of current developments and best practice in strategic thinking.
  • Applies strategic thinking to benefit the whole Company.
  • Is aware of the global business environment and its impact on Company strategy.

Developed
Thinking is future orientated. Views events from multiple perspectives; Creates novel ideas which go beyond organisational and conventional thinking. Communicates clear vision of how business will develop in the future, taking account of developments internal and external to the Company. Has a clear idea of where they want to go and how to get there. Thinks in a strategic way, makes sound judgement business and sets broad objectives for the future of their business and the Company as a whole.

Developing
Thinks in a strategic way on all organisational issues; Can absorb new data and concepts and uses new information to modify own thinking as a basis for innovation. Keeps long term aims in mind whilst meeting short term and medium term objectives.

Under Developed
Can think strategically within the confines of their own business; Thinks strategically within the constraints of existing culture and practice. Can let tradition get in the way of strategic thinking; Operates within the organisational status quo.

Needs Care
Can be overwhelmed by day to day activities and loses sight of the big picture. Tends to focus exclusively on their own objectives and business area; Has insufficient grasp of the big picture and how their role contributes to the overall goals of the Company. Their thought processes seem to operate at a tactical or short term level with little regard for the strategic linkages and demands of the business.
